Swishahouse rose from Houston's Northside in the late 1990s, built on slowed-down mixtapes that moved through the city like currency. What started as a local tape operation became one of the most influential movements in Southern hip-hop history — the launching pad for a generation of Houston stars.
THE TAKEOVER
The mid-2000s belonged to Swishahouse. Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire — the roster that took Houston's underground sound to the top of the national charts, proving that a mixtape movement could become a mainstream empire without leaving home. The freestyles, the tapes, the swangas, the grills — an entire aesthetic that started on hand-pressed discs.
