DJ LAZY K
DJ Lazy K, “The Mixtape Queen”, introduces her Dopemix show (trailer, from her own channel).
THE MIXTAPE QUEEN
DJ Lazy K was born in Mexico and grew up in Madrid and Switzerland. She came to New York around 1991 for hip-hop, taught herself to DJ and became one of the few women putting out mixtapes in the 1990s. Raekwon of Wu-Tang gave her an early shot, and Jay-Z cut songs for her tapes.
BUTTA MIXIN’ RICAN
Her 1996 tape Butta Mixin’ Rican Part 2 is still passed around: 90 minutes of mid-’90s New York rap with new songs, freestyles, diss tracks and blends, heavy on Wu-Tang. It was one of three Butta Mixin’ Rican tapes.
DOPE MIX
Lazy K’s Murda Mamis crew grew from a street team into a roster that included Remy Ma and La La Anthony. Her Dope Mix series passed 100 volumes, putting new artists next to exclusives, and she has worked with French Montana, Waka Flocka Flame, Dipset and Max B.
THE PHYSICAL ERA
This page tracks Lazy K’s run the way it was sold: tapes first, then CDs, then the Dope Mix volumes online. If you have a Lazy K tape that isn’t listed here, the archive wants to hear about it.
