SICK WID IT
E-40 on building an empire, one slang word at a time (Drink Champs, full episode)
THE LABEL
E-40, born Earl Stevens in Vallejo, California, started Sick Wid It Records in 1989. He and his family sold their first records out of car trunks around the Bay, and his 1992 debut Federal came out on the label.
THE CLICK
The Click was the family group at the center of it: E-40, his brother D-Shot, his sister Suga-T and his cousin B-Legit. Down and Dirty came out in 1992 and Game Related in 1995.
THE MAJOR DEAL
Sick Wid It partnered with Jive. In a Major Way (1995) went platinum. Later, My Ghetto Report Card (2006) debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with “Tell Me When to Go”. The label is still independently owned.
THE PHYSICAL ERA
This page tracks the Sick Wid It run the way it was sold: tapes out of the trunk, then CDs in every Bay Area record store. If you have a Sick Wid It pressing that isn’t listed here, the archive wants to hear about it.
