DJ Kay Slay came up from the streets of Harlem — first as a graffiti legend in the 1980s, then reborn in the mixtape era as the Drama King. His Streetsweeper tapes became the battleground of New York hip-hop: if two rappers had a problem, the diss records premiered on a Kay Slay mixtape. He didn't just host the drama — he was the referee, the ring, and the announcer all at once.
THE STREETSWEEPER EMPIRE
Through the Streetsweepers series and his Hot 97 platform, Kay Slay built one of the most feared and respected names in mixtape history. Exclusive freestyles, beef records nobody else could get, and a gatekeeper role that made his cosign matter. He carried the mixtape tradition from cassettes through CDs and never stopped repping the physical era, releasing albums and tapes deep into the streaming age.
In April 2022, hip-hop lost the Drama King. The culture's respect ran so deep that tributes came from every borough and every coast.

This archive preserves the physical artifacts of Kay Slay's run — the Streetsweeper pressings, the cover art, the series releases — from the era when a mixtape was something you held in your hand. Before YouTube. Before Spotify. The last era of hip-hop that could actually be lost, preserved before it disappeared.
